I have 7 and 8 year olds and they both love this game. You need to be able to read the directions to play properly. You start by treating small animals, guinea pigs, rabbits, hamsters, then when you earn enough money caring for the small animals you can purchase the Cattery, then you have to read information about larger animals, before you can start caring for them, this goes for cats, dogs and horses. Once you pass the horse test ($1,500) you can purchase your own horse and care for other sick horses. My DDs LOVE this part. You can buy a saddle and ride your very own horse in the game. But you have to properly care for the pets by feeding, clean up, petting and treating them or you don't get paid. It sneaks in math by the clients paying for treatment, then you as the Vet have to purchase medications to care for your patients, and if you don't care for them properly you don't get paid.
