An amazing game that's now on the Switch!!! Basically that means you can take it with you wherever you go with the greatest of ease. For those who have never played the game, have a Switch, and are interested this is a must have game. Vets interested in a portable version might want to read on.I love Dark Souls and have probably put thousands of hours into this game on both the original Prepare to Die Edition and the Remastered. I played the Remastered on the PC and PS4. I will try to keep the comparisons fair. I won't focus too much on the technical aspect as I understand that the Switch is a less powerful, portable device. My biggest gripe with the game is what all it lacks and the numerous bugs. This is even more of a gripe considering the game was delayed for months. The bugs that I get easily at the beginning of the game are unacceptable in a game that had a delayed release and a day one patch. I'll go more into the bugs later on.Technical:As far as technical details go, the Switch runs the game at a capped 30fps. 1080p Docked and 720p undocked. I don't want to ding it too hard for this but I feel like the Switch should be capable of running the game at 60FPS. Maybe they couldn't keep it consistent. I would have been nice if they had an option to unlock the framerate (With a note that dips may occur). This also makes me wonder about the future titles on the Switch. Bandai-Namco made a statement about bringing the other games from the trilogy over. I don't see Dark Souls 3 running on the Switch given how limited this game is. The game does run consistent 30fps, even in Blighttown. The "Remastered" bit:The the main changes to the remastered are in the game with one exception. Swapping covenants at bonfires, menu for multiple item uses, button remapping (Praise the sun), the useless extra bonfire, motion control gestures. They are all in the game. The one that is missing is the ability to resize the UI. I guess the reasoning is that it would look too small in portable mode. I don't understand why it was left out for at least docked mode. It was one of my favorite added features in the remastered. The item dupe fixes and what not that are present in the other remastered ports are there. The one fix from the other ports that this one lacks are stored rolls. If you don't know, a store rolls is when you do a roll at the same time as another action that causes the roll to get stored. What this means is that any action after the roll is stored such as a parry or an estus chug will cause the player to roll instead. Stored rolls were an issue on PTDE and it seemed like it was fixed on the remastered. I never had it happen on the PC or PS4 versions. I've had 3 stored rolls on the Switch in the first half of the game. This should not exist and is unacceptable.Bugs:The other bugs that wasn't fixed in the other versions of the remastered still exist. I wasn't really expecting them to be fixed but I figured they were doing something with those extra months of development time. One thing that I have come across is my inputs being eaten... A lot. I've only used the pro controller so I can't confirm if it's specific to that or not. I didn't seem to have this issue on PC or PS4. The other bug that I have come across is that I am unable to open the gesture menu after the "Victory Achieved" message and shortly after. No bowing to your sunbro after a bit of jolly co-op. My guess is this is due to the menu queue clearing to stop people from duping. The fix is just implemented very poorly.Compressed Audio:Yeah, it's bad. I don't think it is as bad as what some reviewers are saying but it is a thing.I feel, given the extended development time, that the Switch version of the game is a very lazy port. I don't think my expectations are too high either. I thought Dark Souls Remastered was worth the money on the other platforms. A lot of my complaints could easily be patched out. Given From Software's history, patches are very unlikely. If you have never played it do not let my review deter you. It's a fantastic game. The problems I listed wouldn't really soil the experience (too much anyway). I'm simply bringing attention to the issues in the game in hopes that these mistakes will be fixed and avoided in the future. If things change I will update the score. As the game is now I feel this is a fair score.Edit: Docking it a start until they fix the issue with inputs being eaten. It only happens to this game on the Switch and this is the only version of the Remastered that it happens to.First, I would like to say that even though I own all versions of Dark Souls (I, II, III) on all platforms, I am not an ardent fanboy. So with that out of the way, let us get on with my subjective review...ahaha...If you are going to buy this version of Dark Souls Remastered there are a few things you should note: 1.) This game, docked only performs at 30FPS (a fluctuating 30FPS at that)--On PS4/Xbox One/PC, it runs a 60 FPS or higher (if your pc rig is top of the line); 2.) Native 720P. This is fine by me as it does not affect gameplay but it should be noted; 3.) The game is MEANT for handheld mode, meaning, it looks and performs better as a handheld game (intentional or not, that is just how it works). 4.) There are anti-aliasing and sometimes "screen tearing" problems in docked mode. 5.) A and B buttons are switched (must be a port from the Japanese version as this is a common theme when buying Japanese games), and you cannot change it (this is for confirmation inputs and backing out of menus; 6.) Across all platforms this game is antiquated. No ifs ands or buts, no matter how they would have remastered it on any console (currently playing on PS4 and the same pop in textures and overall stagnant world are the same), this game is ugly and hollow feeling. Maybe in 2011 this would have been fine, however, to me, the game should have stayed in 2011 as to retain my fond memories of it. Now those have been tainted. Now for the naysayers, the following are positives that this port has: 1.) It is a handheld Dark Souls (although the Joy-Cons can get pretty cramped so it is advisable to use in kickstand mode and use the Switch Pro Controller); 2.) It performs amazingly well in handheld mode (a lot like Doom did); 3.) For those mentioning muted or compressed sounds, I fail to hear it. Maybe it is my televisions audio capabilities or my Switch has better speakers than most (ahaha, doubtful) it sounds as good as the others; 4.) If you are downloading the digital version, it is only 7.1 GB's (relatively small compared to other games). To conclude, if you buy this version you are either in one of three categories: 1.) You only own a Switch and have never played Darksouls; 2.) You want a portable version of Darksouls for the novelty; 3.) Or you fit into both groups. Just know what you are getting before you buy it. It is still an okay game, just not as good as II or III in my opinion. It's great in docked mode too, but limited to 30 fps. Best to play on a different console if playing on a TV, but if Switch is your only system then it's perfectly fine.As far as the game itself goes, it's really hard to review. I suspect that most people have an idea of what Dark Souls is, but in case you don't, I recommend looking up in depth reviews on YouTube before committing to a purchase.
